How the Loners use SPOT:

At the start of a ride, while getting ready to go, send an “OK”. This lets your contacts know you are out on a ride. They can see where you started from and have an idea of what area you are riding in.

After you have sent the “OK” and you know that it has been sent (you know this by having received the “OK” on your cell or the OK light has stopped blinking), turn off and on the unit and put it into TRACKING mode. This allows your contacts to check and see where you are during your ride.

When you finish your ride, it is very important to send your second “OK” – This lets your contacts know that you have finished your ride and you are safe.

If during your ride, let’s say you get a flat tire and you are going to be in the same spot for awhile, you need to send an “OK”. The reason for this “OK” is to let anyone who is tracking you on the Internet know that you are “OK”. If you don’t send the “OK” then multiple tracking messages show you are in the same spot and those who are tracking you might think you have crashed and are unconscious. If they can’t get a hold of you, you might get them spun up for no reason. After fixing your flat, send out another “OK” and then put your unit back in tracking mode.

If you press HELP, that means you are stuck and need help. This is NOT for emergencies. Use 911 for emergencies. Example of how the Loners use HELP: If Peter in Newbury Park gets a HELP from Casey and Casey is in Nevada, Casey is expecting Peter to find a way to get someone to Casey.

Choose your contacts wisely and make sure they understand what is expected of them if they should get a HELP message from you.

READ YOUR MANUAL

PRACTICE WITH YOUR SPOT BEFORE YOU REALLY NEED TO USE IT.

Tracking on the Internet

Due to delays in the SPOT system, there can be a significant delay before your SPOT tracking messages start to show up. Begin testing your configuration by sending some OK messages and turning on tracking. Remember that the SPOT tracking feature shuts itself off every 24 hours.

Spot OK, Help, and Tracking messages do not go out instantaneously when you hit the button or exactly every 10 minutes when tracking is enabled. In fact it can take as long as 20 minutes for a message to go out and sometimes it doesn't go at all. Read your SPOT manual carefully. Tracking is usually more timely than OK messages, but both can be unreliable at times. SPOT must have a clear path to the sky.
